BRIDGEr Gives Keynote Speech at the Values of Tourism Conference in Copenhagen
5 Oct 2014
BRIDGEr Monika Buscher (Lancaster University) gave a keynote speech she co-authored with her colleauge Sarah Becklake (Lancaster University) at the The Values of Tourism Conference - the 23rd Nordic Symposium on Tourism and Hospitality Research, held at the Copenhagen Business School, Copehnagen, Denmark, 2-4 October 2014. About 200 researchers attended the symposium, reflecting a remarkable diversity of contemporary scholarship.
The title of the speech was Embodying Security, Solidarity, Freedom. Through an examination of disaster and tourism insecurities, Monika and Sarah explored how new technologically facilitated (dis)embodied securitization practices are achieved and experienced in moments of liminality, and discussed both their reflexive and subversive potential. They also highlighted the emergence of new ethical challenges and opportunities by tracing examples ranging from the technologically facilitated (re)production of 'safe bodies' and 'safe bubbles' for tourist experience to the involvement of tourists in disaster response.
